Is there such thing as time off?
In today's fast-paced world, the concept of "time off" can often feel like a distant dream. I find myself constantly juggling work commitments, personal responsibilities, and the pursuit of my passions. The traditional nine-to-five schedule seems outdated, and the line between work and personal life? It's as blurry as ever. So, is there such a thing as "time off" anymore? I’ve been thinking about this a lot & it turns out that maybe it’s me, hi. I’m the problem it’s me.
STEP 1 - Setting Expectations: The Managerial Manoeuvre
Alright, let’s look at the root of the problem. For me, it’s two things. Perfectionism and guilt. As a manager & leader, I've got my hands full, I don’t ever want to leave my team high and dry. The magic trick here? Setting expectations.
Picture this: I agreed to check in with my team on designated days, like Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It's not just a game-changer; it's a lifesaver. This proactive approach empowers my team to keep the ball rolling without feeling like they've been deserted. Plus, it saves me from that gnawing guilt that can creep in when you dare to take some time off. It also stops me from being “that girl” in the pool on her lilo checking emails. When expectations are crystal clear, trust takes root, and everyone knows their role in the grand scheme of things. It's like a well-oiled machine, and I can step away without breaking a sweat.
STEP 2: Fueling Creativity & Saving Sanity
We've all got our creative sparks and sanity to preserve. I learnt on my most recent trip that taking time off isn't about slacking off; it's an investment in your mental and emotional well-being AND an opportunity for a fresh perspective.
So, here's the scoop: My brain is always on. That’s the role of a creative. Everything I see serves as a fresh idea or new perspective. I just make sure I have an outlet - maybe it’s a journal to write down everything I saw or photography to capture that moment. For me, that is recharging. And guess what? I return to work with a zest for life that would make a lemon jealous. My fresh perspective benefits me, my team, and our grand mission. It's a win-win!
STEP 3: Embrace the Chaos
Don't fight the current; ride the startup wave. Spend time with other founders and small business owners. (trust me, they get it) Find those moments of zen amidst the chaos – for me, it’s rising early and working before anyone can reach me. When I am on holiday - I use time zones to my advantage to ensure I am organised and one step ahead, which in turn allows me to relax for the rest of my day. Adaptability is the name of the game. By diving headfirst into the startup spirit, you'll craft your very own work-life harmony.
I think what I’m learning is the new work-life balance isn't about rigidly boxing in work and personal life. It's about setting the stage, nurturing your creative spirit, and rolling with the punches.
